Rachel Cooper

I am Professor of Design Management and Policy at the University of Lancaster, I am  Chair of LICA and Director of  ImaginationLancaster (a design led research lab, researching products, places and systems for the future).

My research covers: design thinking; design management; design policy; across all sectors of industry, I  have a specific interest in design for wellbeing and socially responsible design. My current projects include
1) An AHRC knowledge exchange hub ‘The Creative Exchange’ that works with companies, academics  and students (undertaking a new type of PhD) to look at citizen engagement in the ‘Digital Public Space’.
2) EPSRC Liveable Cities – a six year research programme  working with cities to identify and test radical design and engineering solutions that will lead to low carbon, resource secure future cities in which societal wellbeing is prioritised.

I  am a member of the European Design Innovation Leadership board and am currently part of an EU project creating a European Design Platform. I am also a lead expert advisor to the UK government on the Foresight Programme ‘The Future of Cities’.

Over the past 20 years I have  written extensively in the field, including The Design Agenda (1995) Creative Product Design (2000), The Design Experience (2003), Process Management in Design and Construction(2004), Designing Sustainable Cities (2009)Constructing Futures (2010), The Handbook of Design Management (Berg August 2011) and am currently commissioning editor for an Ashgate series on Socially Responsible Design.  My latest book is Wellbeing and the Environment (Wiley Blackwell 2014).
