Mapping the Future of D+M

Welcome to online hub for Mapping the Future of DESMA

This is a space to co-create a visual map of the DESMA field. We believe that a visual representation of the Design Management field can serve as a valuable resource that both enriches personal research and strengthens the community. As such, our mapping initiative aims to visualize topics currently being researched in the field of Design Management in order to:

  • Reveal unforeseen connections among research studies, topics, and programs
  • Support a process of discovery for people entering the field of Design Management
  • Provide a quick overview of where different types of Design Management research is happening around the world
  • Offer a quick resource for discussing, critiquing, and shaping the field of Design Management as a whole

To begin making this map we are undertaking an unprecedented effort to facilitate a discussion in the Design Management community. By hosting a series of workshops around the world, we’re gathering feedback on what people are researching and why. Then through this online hub we seek to connect each of our local workshops with the global DESMA Network.

If you want to submit your research interest to be added to the map you can post to the online discussion at our DESMA Map Forum.

Getting Started

On September 2nd, 2014 we kicked off this effort by facilitating a workshop at the 19th Academic Design Management Conference, hosted by DMI. The results of this workshop will serve as a foundation for the living map we’re co-creating with the Design Management community.

We’re in the midst of processing the results from the initial mapping exercise. Over the next several months we’ll be turning them into a living map, which we will keep open for further development down the road! Stay tuned for more updates to come soon, and in the meantime, enjoy this teaser with some of the final presentations of the workshop.

You can follow along as we synthesize the outcomes from the workshop here:
